Today we are talking to David King, the CTO at Flywire. And we discuss how to approach growing your network and creating relationships, what it takes to get your team to think like entrepreneurs, and advice for CTO’s going through the M&A process.
All of this, right here on the Modern CTO Podcast!
I am a serial entrepreneur and CTO with a passion for the intersection of technology and business. In 2018, OnPlan Holdings, a company I co-founded in 2014 with John Talaga, combined with Flywire. At OnPlan, I leveraged my background in payments, analytics, and billing to develop innovative solutions in both healthcare and higher education. OnPlan Health (now Flywire Health) and OnPlanU (now Flywire Education) help patients afford healthcare and students afford education by presenting easy and affordable payment options.
I am currently the Chief Technology Officer at Flywire, overseeing our technology platforms. Flywire is a leading global provider of billing, payments, and receivables management solutions.
In 1997, I co-founded infiNET Solutions, Inc. with Harvey Gannon, which in 2000 became one of the first companies to deliver software-as-a-service to higher education. As CTO, I architected and managed automated tuition billing and commerce system for major universities in the United States. The system processed more than $16 billion annually.
In 2006, Nelnet, Inc. (NNI) acquired infiNET. At Nelnet, I served as president of the higher education division where I oversaw sales, product development, customer support, marketing, and strategic planning. While at Nelnet, I lead the development of an online medical education program as well as a data security company.
In 2010, I co-founded Amagisoft, a venture where I developed WODHOPPER and FarmMatch. The following year, I invested in and provided guidance to Panjo.com which sold to Tapatalk.com in 2016.
I am currently on the advisory board of insITe, a technology business management software company, and Wine Country Online, a destination management organization for promoting California’s Wine Country.
At Flywire, global collaboration is at the heart of what we do: Empowering opportunities globally and locally by solving complex payment problems.
Our full-service billing, payment, and receivables solutions connect all the entities involved to make transactions faster, more secure, less expensive, and more transparent. Flywire clients in a variety of industry verticals use our platform to tailor the payment experience for their customers and to create a single point of visibility and control for payer engagement and receivables management—from invoicing and payment through reconciliation.
