“What Does ‘Done’ Look Like?

As CTOs, we are constantly investing in IT initiatives to enable the business. But in order to communicate effectively, we need to understand what ‘done’ looks like and then articulate the incremental steps required to get there. As a by-product, the business benefits need to be in the form of business outcomes so that they can be simply understood.

For example, let’s say you want to improve application performance because of stability issues. A step in your strategy could be to implement an application performance monitoring tool because you want to proactively identify and address performance issues before they impact your customers. A business outcome could be helping to reduce revenue risk, enhancing the customer experience or realizing higher productivity. So, in this case, it’s not just an IT tool and it’s clear as to how it affects the business.”
