Dinosaur CTO
This is the CTO that’s been doing the same job at the same Organization for 25 years (or more) with the same other executives since day one. They might need to catch up on what’s happening and what’s going on today. No insult intended!
Business CTO
The business CTO is usually very well-qualified from a business management standpoint. These execs typically come from a top business school and have lots of experience on how to run an organization at a high-level. They may also be involved in tech company acquisitions. I think the business CTO can benefit from insight into how to keep tabs on technical teams and discern between good development and bad.
Developer CTO
A developer CTO is the programmer or developer who’s busy writing code – and one day wakes up to find a whole organization suddenly relying on him. This guy wants more knowledge about the management experience but still from a tech based perspective. Instead of giving generic business school information, I like to share exactly how I moved from developer to CTO.
Bro CTO
The bro CTO is by far my favorite. He’s the guy who digs the CTO title but isn’t necessarily the best developer or business person in the world. He just knows he wants to be CTO, and my experience can help him get started. My content offers some nice behind-the-scenes raw exposure to my personal experience.
This post comes from my upcoming book, Modern CTO. Pre-register for a copy here.
